Fatwa Issued Against TVK Chief Vijay Over Iftar Party Controversy

The All India Muslim Jamaat, led by president Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, has issued a fatwa against Tamil Nadu’s actor-turned-politician Vijay, head of the Tamil Nadu Vijay Karthik (TVK) party. The fatwa stems from allegations that Vijay portrayed Muslims negatively in his films and invited controversial figures to an Iftar party.

Speaking to ANI, Razvi Bareilvi stated, “Vijay has depicted Muslims as terrorists in his movies and invited gamblers and liquor consumers to his Iftar event. This has angered Sunni Muslims in Tamil Nadu, prompting their request for a fatwa.” He further declared that Muslims should not support Vijay or his political endeavors.

In addition to this controversy, Vijay recently challenged the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025 in the Supreme Court. The court, hearing related petitions, expressed concerns over violence in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district and indicated it may stay certain provisions of the Act, such as those allowing non-Muslims in Waqf Boards and empowering collectors to resolve Waqf property disputes.

The Supreme Court bench, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, emphasized balancing equities, stating, “Properties declared as Waqf by courts will not be de-notified, and only Muslims can be appointed as non-ex officio members of Waqf Boards.” While no final order was passed, the court’s deliberations highlight the contentious nature of the Act.

This dual controversy surrounding Vijay—his Iftar party and his legal challenge—has sparked significant debate, placing the TVK leader at the center of religious and political tensions in Tamil Nadu.
